BURSA MALAYSIA ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF NEW CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
Bursa Malaysia Berhad today announced the appointment of Omar Merican as its Chief Operating Officer effective September 16, 2005. In his new role, Omar will assist the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and be responsible for the strategic and operational directions of the exchanges, clearing, settlement and depository, information services and group business development operating units.
Bursa Malaysia Berhad's Chief Executive Officer, Yusli Mohamed Yusoff said, "Omar's extensive local and global market experience will certainly add significant value to the exchange's efforts in developing our capital market and business further."
Omar was the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Merican & Partners Asset Management Sdn Bhd from 1997 to 2004, a company providing innovative fund management and futures fund management services licensed by the Securities Commission. Prior to running his own business, Omar held various key positions in multinational companies including Vice President in Solomon Brothers Hong Kong Limited, Head of Specialist Equity Derivative Sales with James Capel Asia, Hong Kong and Head of UK Equity Derivative Research with James Capel & Co, London, United Kingdom. He has also held directorships in the Commodity and Monetary Exchange of Malaysia (COMMEX), the Kuala Lumpur Options and Financial Futures Exchange (KLOFFE) and was a Founding Alternate Director of the Malaysian Exchange of Securities Dealing and Automated Quotation (MESDAQ).
Bursa Malaysia also announced the consolidation of its Chief Information Officer positions into one unit. Yew Kim Keong, the current Chief Information Officer - Operations will assume the role of sole CIO effective October 1, 2005. As part of his expanded responsibilities, Yew has been named Project Director of Bursa Trade, formerly known as the Common Trading Platform initiative.
In addition, Devanesan Evanson has been appointed Deputy Chief Regulations Officer effective September 1, 2005. Prior to his current position, Devanesan was Head of the Group Internal Audit and Risk Management unit (GIARM).
Replacing Devanesan as Head, Group Internal Audit and Risk Management is Lew Lup Seong, who formerly served as Bursa Malaysia's Financial Controller. As Head of GIARM, Lew will report to the Audit and Risk Management Committees respectively.
Lew's previous position has been filled by Nadzirah Abdul Rashid effective September 1, 2005. In her new capacity as Financial Controller, Nadzirah reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer.
